I don’t use the term “extremely rare” very often, but in this case it applies. First, it is an Oak slat trunk. By nature these are some of the most rare, and most desirable trunks ever made. Second, by trunk standards, this trunk is quite “new”. Probably made in the late 1890s, this trunk was made at least 10 to 15 years after Oak slat trunk production was thought to have ended. Third, this trunk has a very high center dome, or hump. Rising up 6” from flat in the center, then gradually tapering down to a 3” rise on the ends. Last, but not least, this trunk is very big. The trunk measures 40” long, 23” wide, and 30” high. After conferring with other trunk experts we have conclude that this trunk could literally be the “Last Oak Slat Trunk Made”. All the wood was carefully sanded, stained, and coated with Tung oil. The metal was painted Satin Black to match the original baked-on, Linseed oil finish. The handles were replaced with 3 layer, stitched leather. The original working lock was cleaned, oiled, and has the original key. It is unlikely you will ever see another trunk like this.
